HIPTSON —The new erectile dysfunction treatment, called “Viagra,” has gained attention for its benefits. The new treatment is based on a recent study in the journal Urology that found that men who used the drug for more than two months had improved sexual function. Viagra, which has a similar mechanism as Viagra, is also prescribed by doctors to men who have erectile dysfunction.
“They are doing what they should be doing,” says Dr. David Graham, who directs the research program at Harvard. “They’re putting their patient’s health at the forefront, and it’s just going to work.”
While the drug can help improve sexual function in men with erectile dysfunction, it doesn’t seem to help men who have other health issues, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or certain mental illnesses, says Graham. Men who have diabetes are also taking Viagra to help manage their condition. In the study, about 50 percent of men who took Viagra said they were satisfied with their sexual function.
While the benefits of Viagra are promising, Graham says many people who have tried the drug have reported side effects, including headache, back pain, and muscle aches. “Many of the people who have had side effects have said, ‘I can’t do it anymore,” Graham says. “And I would say, I’d be surprised if it worked for you.”
Viagra is not the first treatment for ED that has been tested on its own, says Graham. The drug is now available by prescription only, and more studies are needed to compare it with other options, including some drugs like Cialis and Levitra.
